Well butter my backside and call me a biscuit!

If we need a positive expression when good news takes us by surprise, this one takes the cake.

Oh, the joy of being surprised unexpectedly!

  • Well Butter My Backside and Call Me a Biscuit--biscuits on a platePerhaps the door swings open and someone we love dearly stands there.
  • Maybe an answered prayer that seemed impossible.
  • When someone pays for our meal out of the blue.
  • Or a text from someone we haven’t heard from in years.

In the South a grin would emerge that would be almost impossible to wipe away and we would say, “Well butter my backside and call me a biscuit!”

Whether we are southern as “all git out” or “suddenly southern” due to a move or vacation, one thing is for sure…. learning southern slang is crucial.

When the trials and tribulations of life have us up against the Red Sea….

God parted it for Moses so the Israelites could pass through (Exodus 14). He can part it for us as well. God can and does exceed our expectations.

Expect the unexpected.

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) says, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”

Under Wraps

Under Wraps--gifts under a Christmas treeDuring Christmas, we keep a lot of things under wraps. We hide gifts in closets and under beds. When no one is looking, we wrap our gifts with paper and bows. Once under the tree, everyone wants to know what those packages contain.

If we keep anything under wraps, we keep it a secret.

We don’t want others to know our information. Our secret usually lasts a short time. Examples, other than Christmas presents, include:

  • News reports
  • An engagement
  • Whether a baby will be a boy or girl

We don’t want others to know what is under wraps until the right time.

If people spill the beans, they ruin our plans. Therefore, we tell them to bite their tongues – to stay quiet.

Not everything we wrap is under wraps.

We want to share most good news.

The greatest gift came wrapped in strips of cloth.

When Jesus was born, angels announced His birth to shepherds. The shepherds found Jesus lying in a manger. Afterwards, they told others what they had heard and seen.

Let’s not keep the good news of Jesus under wraps.

Instead, let’s share with the world what the angels proclaimed.

“A Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12 NIV).

Jump through Hoops

Jump through Hoops--a dolphin jumping through a hoop in a poolSome animals have to jump through hoops to get what they want.

People also jump through hoops.

We have to perform certain tasks to get what we want.

Several services require us to jump through hoops.

That is true for:

  • Health care
  • Insurance
  • Government agencies
  • Jobs
  • Businesses
  • Schools

Often, we must jump through several hoops.

Phone calls may mean:

  • Make the call.
  • Wait on hold.
  • Transfer to another person.
  • Wait on hold again.
  • Leave a message or call back later.

Paperwork can include:

  • Fill out a form.
  • Wait.
  • Fill out more forms.
  • Wait again.
  • Make a phone call to see what happened to the paperwork.

Have you been there and done that?

I have bad news and good news.

The bad news: We will probably have to continue jumping through hoops for most services.

The good news: Jesus loves us just as we are. If we give Him control of our lives, He will:

  • Forgive our sins
  • Offer guidance every day
  • Give us eternal life

No hoops, just an invitation into the family of God and a home in heaven.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV).
