Water Down

Water Down

Water Down--waterfallWhatever lies below a waterfall gets watered down quickly. The water:

  • Covers it
  • Weakens it
  • Overwhelms it

If we hike to the bottom of the waterfall, its power grabs our attention. We rarely notice other sights and sounds.

To water down means to cover or weaken something.

Surfaces we may cover with water include:

  • Yards with new grass seed
  • Clothes ready to wash
  • Houses and buildings in danger from nearby fires

We add water to weaken or dilute:

  • Soups
  • Juices or other drinks
  • Sauces

We also water down or weaken:

  • Stock values
  • Agreements
  • Laws
  • Truth

All lose worth and become less effective when we omit important information.

If we water down the truth, everyone loses.

We may not want to share hard truth. However, we need to know reality, even if we don’t like it or it hurts. Plus, people no longer trust us if we tell less than the truth. Better to stay on the up and up.

If we have not told the truth, remember confession is good for the soul. It’s never too late to turn over a new leaf.

“An honest witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies” Proverbs 14:5 NIV).

Tangled Web

Tangled Web

Tangled Web--spider web“O what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!”

Those lines from Sir Walter Scott’s poem, “Marmion,” remain as true today as they were in 1808.

When we deceive others, life becomes difficult for them and for us.

  • They learn not to trust anything we say.
  • We must remember all the lies we told, so we can keep our stories straight.
  • Both of us become tied in knots.

A tangled web gets ugly.

Although we enjoy the beauty of a spider web, we do not enjoy getting tangled (trapped or twisted) in it. Flies and small bugs trapped in a web often become a spider’s dinner.

A tangled web confuses us.

We have a hard time getting out of the problems we cause. Like flies in a spider web, every way we move seems to tangle us worse. We cannot figure out what to do.

Although hard, we can escape our tangled mess.

Come clean. Life gets better when we tell the truth. The truth prevents a tangled web. The truth also leads us out of any web we weave.

When we follow God’s truth, we find our way to real freedom.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 NIV).

Tall Tale

Tall Tale

Tall Tale--whales divingA tall tale is a whale of a tale.

It is a big tale — a big story — much bigger than what really happened.

Because a tall tale is so big, it captures our attention. Most people don’t believe it but listen to it anyway. A few of us swallow a tall tale hook, line, and sinker. We believe the storyteller until people start laughing. Then we become part of the joke.

Comedians often tell tall tales. They base many of their stories on truth but add to them. They make their stories:

  • Bigger
  • Funnier
  • Crazier

We also share tall tales with relatives and friends. Some of us hold contests to see who can tell the tallest tale. We often tell such stories around campfires.

Tall tales grow bigger the more often we tell them.

I could tell you just the facts about a recent whale watching trip.

  • We saw between 10 and 20 whales.
  • The whales swam close to the boat.
  • Their tails and fins came out of the water as they dived to find food.

In a tall tale about those whales, I might tell you:

  • We saw at least 100 whales.
  • They swam so close to the boat we could rub their backs.
  • Those whales gave us high fives with their tails and fins.

Most tall tales offer a few moments of fun.

They become lies when told to hurt or deceive. Often when we lie, people know something’s fishy, and we end up in the doghouse.

Avoid tall tales that deceive. Enjoy tall tales told for fun.

A good man is known by his truthfulness; a false man by deceit and lies” (Proverbs 12:17 TLB).

You’re Pulling My Leg

You’re Pulling My Leg

You're Pulling My LegIf you’re pulling my leg, you’re telling me an untrue story as a joke.

Many people recognize such a story as unbelievable. Not me! I swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

Almost anyone can pull my leg. Tell me the wildest tale, and I believe it. My picture should be included in the dictionary under the word gullible.

That’s okay. Everyone enjoys a little innocent fun. We laugh at how easily people fool me. Maybe someday I will learn.

How I wish all life could be as innocent. How I wish all untruths were jokes.

We live with the reality that we often hurt one another with our words.

  • We tell lies.
  • We say one thing but mean another.
  • We keep our mouths shut when we need to speak the truth.

Every day we choose our words. Will what we say help others or hurt them?

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14 HCSB).
