Brush Up

Brush Up--cluttered deskI frequently need to brush up my desk and my online skills. Both take time, but both are worth the effort. If I don’t clean my desk, the clutter becomes unmanageable. If I fail to refresh or improve my online skills, my writing suffers.

To brush up has at least three meanings.

  1. To clean with a brush.

This might include:

  • Crumbs from a table
  • Dirt off the floor
  • Dust from a porch
  1. To clean or improve something (with or without a brush).

In addition to my desk, I need to clean or update the rest of the house. I have no problem with getting the house clean as a whistle.  However, I don’t like change, so I update only when necessary.

I also need to occasionally update my:

  • Medical information
  • Résumé
  • Contacts
  1. To improve personal knowledge or abilities.

I learn new information or review what I already know. That refreshes my memory and improves my abilities as a:

  • Writer
  • Caregiver
  • Bible study leader for middle school girls
  • And other roles

Play by Ear

Play by Ear

Play by Ear--hands on piano keysMy sister received most of our family’s piano ability. She plays by reading music, plus she can play by ear. If she hears a song, she eventually figures out how to play it.

To play music by ear means to play without looking at printed music.

I have a hard time playing with or without the written score.

Play by ear also means to act without specific plans or rules.

We decide what to do as we go. Rather than worry about details, we

  • Remain flexible.
  • Adapt to the circumstances.
  • Take one step at a time.
  • Deal with events as they arise.

We fly by the seat of our pants.

Some of us do well playing by ear. Others desire more organization.

We want to know:

  • What are we to do?
  • When are we to do it?
  • How do we do it?
  • Who will help us?
  • What happens every step of the way?

Whether we prefer to plan or not, we can make beautiful music with our lives.

Every day offers opportunities to:

  • Do our best.
  • Encourage one another.
  • Worship God.

“I will sing and make music to the Lord” (Psalm 27:6 NIV).

Herding Cats

Herding Cats

Herding Cats--Five kittens on grassJuggling several responsibilities feels like herding cats. Difficult at its best, it becomes impossible at its worst. That truth holds, whether we:

  • Teach an unruly class
  • Work on multiple assignments

We find ourselves spread too thin.

Herding cats usually refers to an unmanageable group of people.  

Trying to organize them becomes a nightmare. Think about:

  • Planning a wedding with people from several states
  • Getting a perfect picture of all those people

A few years ago, a commercial based on this expression became wildly popular. It compared the ease of herding cattle to the difficulty of herding cats.

Caring for small children frequently feels like herding cats.

Ask day care workers or preschool teachers. They organize school plays or end-of-year programs. Yet, children have others interests and ignore most directions.

Our most difficult work often becomes our most rewarding.

We make a greater difference than we realize.

  • Seemingly minor moments leave lasting impressions.
  • People hear and recall when we wonder if anyone heard or learned anything.

Keep working. Keep changing lives. Keep herding those cats.

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6 NIV).

Fly by the Seat of Our Pants

Fly by the Seat of Our PantsParagliders often fly by the seat of their pants. They depend on wind and weather for safety and success. Those can change quickly.

Sometimes airplane pilots must also fly by the seat of their pants.

  • They can’t see because of bad weather.
  • The plane’s instruments stop working.
  • They hope to arrive safely on a wing and a prayer.

Like pilots and paragliders, we occasionally face new challenges or problems. We can solve those several ways.

  • Organize our information
  • Explore possible solutions
  • Ask experts
  • Fly by the seat of our pants

When we fly by the seat of our pants, we:

  • Have no experience or skills with the situation
  • Do the best we can by ourselves
  • Work without a plan

Many people fly by the seat of their pants and do well. Some of us end up in a mess. Often those messes cause no great harm. At times, however, we hurt ourselves and others.

With our most important decisions, let’s choose a better way.

“As for God, his way is perfect; The word of the Lord is true. He shields all who hide behind him” (2 Samuel 22:31 TLB).

Get Your Ducks in a Row

Get Your Ducks in a RowLife grows hectic if you don’t get your ducks in a row. Mine certainly does.

My desk starts to look like a mountain (or several mountains) of paper. My schedule becomes crazy. I don’t know what to do first. I need to organize – to get my ducks in a row.

Also, if you want only ducks, you need to focus on ducks. Get rid of the geese. Geese look a lot like ducks, as we see in this picture. However, geese are not ducks.

If you fail to organize, you may mistake unnecessary actions for necessary. Like geese, get rid of the unnecessary. Focus on the necessary – the ducks.

If your desk looks like mine, remove the papers you don’t need. If your schedule becomes crazy, plan only what you can do. If you don’t, you soon run out of steam.

Once you get your ducks in a row, you have everything in good order. You do what you need to do when you need to do it.

Some ducky ideas to help you organize:

  • Pack a day or two before trips.
  • Write and follow a financial budget.
  • Study a few days before taking a test.
  • Make a list of needed items before going to a store.

Then rest in the knowledge that you are starting to get your ducks in a row.

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3 NIV).
