On the Up and Up--hot air balloons in front of cloudsOn the up and up sometimes refers to people becoming successful.

With high goals and hard work, they strive for a good:

  • Income
  • Reputation
  • Position

They rise in the business world.

On the up and up also refers to anything improving.

  • Health
  • Work
  • Relationships

Today’s focus relates to behavior.

People on the up and up are:

  • Honest
  • Dependable
  • Respectable
  • Fair

Anything they say can be taken to the bank. As good as their word, they have no need to hide anything they do.

  • When they make a deal, they honor their agreement.
  • If they share information, no one doubts its truth.
  • When they promise to do something, they do it.

People whose behavior is on the up and up live clean, moral, legally upright lives.

They want to do what is right. They may not become rich or famous. However, they find far greater success than money or fame. Their choices give them a clear conscience – a gift money can never buy.

“May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you” (Psalm 25:21 NIV).

For years, many merry-go-rounds placed a brass ring in hard-to-reach places. Riders who reached the ring received a free ride.

The brass ring represents success or the opportunity for success.

Success might mean:

  • Achievement
  • Profit
  • Rewards

People who grab the brass ring show great ambition.

They don’t wait for someone else to hand them an easy job. They take the steps necessary to get where they want to go.

To reach for or grab the brass ring usually involves hard work.

Like farmers, workers get up early to put their hands to the plow. Their efforts usually include:

  • Long hours
  • Willingness to grow and change
  • More work than most co-workers
  • Jobs no one else wants to do
  • Going back to the drawing board when they make mistakes

Success means different things to different people.

Some people thrive in the rat race of competition. Others desire a slower, quieter life. Whatever route a person takes, the key lies in finding one’s purpose in life.

“If anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work (2 Timothy 2:21 ESV).

Make a Splash

Make a Splash--Niagara FallsThe water from Niagara Falls makes quite a splash. Since a right smart of water runs over the falls, we get wet when we get close.

If we make a splash, we get a lot of attention.

People notice us. Niagara Falls makes a physical splash. Those falls receive much more attention than back-yard pools.

To make a splash usually means we achieve success.

  • Actors or athletes receive awards.
  • Businesses set new sales records.
  • Artists display their work around the world.

We don’t have to make a splash to be successful.

Most of us will never receive great awards, set sales records, or receive world-wide attention. We may think we amount to nothing more than a drop in the bucket. However, if we do what God created us to do, we have achieved success.

Success for us may mean:

  • Doing our job well
  • Helping children stay healthy and safe
  • Encouraging people around us
  • Helping those in need

Each of us can make the world a better place, one small act at a time.

We may never make a splash. However, we all make a difference. Let’s make that difference the best one possible:

  • Whoever we are
  • Whatever we do
  • Wherever we serve
  • For as long as we are needed

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV).

The Proof Is in the Pudding

The Proof Is in the Pudding

The proof is in the pudding--bowl of vanilla pudding with raspberriesPudding, or any other food, may look good. It may smell good. Other people may say it tastes good. However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

The proof is in the pudding comes from the above longer and older expression, according to The Phrase Finder.

We know anything is good when it works as it should.

Does it fulfill its purpose? To find out, we:

  • Taste food
  • Turn on a computer
  • Drive a car

We test it. If it works, we use it. If it does not work, we get something else.

The proof is in the pudding applies to our work as well.

We don’t know if we have succeeded until we check the final results. Then we know if what we did worked as it should.

We may think we have failed when time will show we succeeded.

  • Our pudding may not be beautiful, but it tastes great.
  • We may think children never listen until they thank us years later.
  • What seemed a failure may lead to a better plan.

We will never know the final results of all our efforts in this life.

Therefore, we should never give up.

When we get discouraged, we:

  • Keep working.
  • Do what God called us to do.
  • Let our light shine.
  • Leave the results in God’s hands.
  • Pray that our work will make a difference long after we are gone.

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” (Matthew 25:21 NIV).

Third Time's a Charm--4-lead clovers in tic-tac-toe rowI have heard third time’s a charm all my life. Like many older expressions, I could not find its origin.

Third time’s a charm means the third time will probably be successful.

Some people say third time’s a charm for good luck. They believe the expression is true. Others hope it is true.

I don’t believe in luck. However, I do believe in hard work and not giving up. Therefore, the more I try, the greater my chances of success.

Rather than third time’s a charm, I prefer try, try again.

If one effort does not work, I go back to the drawing board until I figure out what to do. I must:

Although I don’t believe in luck, I do enjoy looking for four-leaf clovers that are considered good luck. I also enjoy jokes about the luck of the Irish.

No Holds Barred

No Holds Barred-two wrestlersNo holds barred means no rules.

Years ago, wrestlers fought with no limits. They used any hold they chose. Today, most follow rules.

No holds barred also means extreme.

We do whatever it takes to get what we want. We fight for:

  • The best job
  • More money
  • Freedom

Nothing gets in the way of our goal.

No holds barred is a dangerous way to live.

Without rules, wrestlers risk injury and death. The same applies to all of us.

We need rules.

We may not always like them. However, rules:

  • Give guidance
  • Keep us safe
  • Let us know what to expect

Rules make life better for everyone. They help keep us out of hot water.

God gave the Ten Commandments for a better life. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God and love one another. If we do that, we keep all the others. We stay on the straight and narrow.

“If anyone competes as an athlete, he will not be crowned as the winner unless he competes according to the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5 NET)

Pick Someone’s Brain

Pick Someone's Brain cartoonWhen we pick someone’s brain, we get information from that person.

We need ideas or advice. Therefore, we ask questions, sometimes lots of questions. A few of us probably drive parents and teachers wild with all our questions.

I recently picked several people’s brains.

My blog needed a new theme. Although I love to write blog posts, I hate the technical work. It makes me feel:

I was ready to throw in the towel before I got started.

As much as I wanted to give up, I did not. After picking lots of brains, I finally have a new theme.

Now, I need to pick your brain.

Will you check out the different pages on my site? You don’t have to know any technical information. Just see if it looks okay or if I need to make any changes.

Bear Fruit--berries on a cherry treeDo berries grow on a cherry tree? I don’t think so. Yet, this picture looks that way.

Plants bear their own kind of fruit.

Berries grow on berry vines or plants. Cherries grow on cherry trees.

People also bear fruit.

Like plants, they bear their own kind of fruit.

  • Farmers grow crops.
  • Owners of clothing stores sell clothes.
  • Artists create works of art.

All have their own talents. Like the berry vine on this cherry tree, people may get close to those with other talents. Yet they bear our own fruit. Few people are a jack of all trades.

To bear fruit means people have good results.

Their work ends in success.

  • Farmers grow good crops.
  • Clothing store owners sell lots of clothes.
  • Artists create amazing paintings or other works of art.

Whatever people’s talents, they do well to bear the best fruit possible.

Remember, people reap what they sow. Therefore, they need to put their hand to the plow, ready to do good work

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers” (Luke 6: 43-44 NIV).

Beat Your Head against a Wall--stone wall with redbud trees in frontIf you beat your head against a wall, you try to do something that looks hopeless.

You may also say you:

  • Bang your head against a wall
  • Bang your head against a brick wall

However you say it, the expression means you waste your time.

You beat your head against a wall when you try again and again with no success.

Few people beat their head against a real wall. However, some do. Unless you want a terrible headache, don’t try it.

Beat your head against a wall means you feel frustrated.

You may want to:

  • Reach a goal that appears impossible
  • Help someone who refuses your help
  • Stop a bad habit you keep repeating

You cannot figure out what to do. As a result, you get down in the dumps.

Although frustrated, you don’t want to give up too soon.

  • You may reach your goal if you try one more time.
  • The person you want to help may succeed with one more chance.
  • You will never break that bad habit unless you keep trying.

With one more try, you may begin to see daylight.

Sometimes you turn your frustrations into beauty.

What can a farmer do with rocks in his field?

  • He can beat his head against a wall because of all the rocks.
  • Or he can build a fence that becomes a work of art.

Occasionally you do need to give up.

You decide to spend your time more wisely. Therefore, you:

  • Do what you can.
  • Accept what you cannot.
  • Make the best use of the time you have.

“Why bother even trying to do anything with you when you just keep to your bullheaded ways? You keep beating your heads against brick walls. (Isaiah 1:5 MSG).

Begin to See Daylight

Begin to See Daylight -- a sunriseIf we get up early, we begin to see daylight as the sun rises. After a long night, daylight appears. We enjoy the promise of a new day.

Sometimes our lives feel like a long night.

We face problems with no end in sight.

  • We think we will never get out of school.
  • Our job never seems to end.
  • Goals appear too far away to reach.

We begin to see daylight when success seems possible.

  • Classes are almost over.
  • We near the end of our long task.
  • Our goals appear within reach.

We finally see light at the end of the tunnel.

We don’t see daylight when we look the wrong way.

If we fail to look outside, we never see the sun rise. If we always look on the bad side of everything, we never see the good. We remain down in the dumps.

As this New Year begins, we choose.

  • Will we focus on our problems and the dark side of life?
  • Or will we look up and begin to see daylight?
  • When we begin to see daylight, will we let our light shine?

“My God turns my darkness into light” (Psalm 18:28 NIV).
