Whale of a Time
My husband and I had a whale of a time watching whales off the coast of Cape Cod. What a thrill. I thought we might see one or two whales, but they were everywhere. Whales surrounded our boat.
That may sound like a whale of a tale, but it’s true. My pictures don’t begin to capture all we saw in spite of a light rain.
A whale of a time means an exceptionally good time.
The experience is:
- Enjoyable
- Fun
- Exciting
- Huge (like the size of a whale)
Occasionally we add an adjective to the expression and say we had a whale of a good time.
We differ on what makes a whale of a time.
- Some of us enjoy sports. Others enjoy arts. Many of us appreciate both.
- Some of us enjoy mountains. Others enjoy ocean. For many of us, it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Will we choose to enjoy whatever this day offers?
Certainly, some days challenge us more than others. Nevertheless, our outlook makes a tremendous difference in our degree of enjoyment.
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:1-2 NIV).

I agree, Melissa. I have a whale of a time when I watch dolphins or whales on video or up close. Blessings, my friend.
Great post, Diana! I bet you did have a whale of a time watching those whales. I’d love to see one someday! Thanks also for the reminder to enjoy the gift of each day. Blessings to you!
Thank you, Kim. We did have a whale of a time, and I still do as I remember. I hope the whales cooperate by showing up when you get to venture out to see them. In the meantime, let’s both enjoy today and every day!
Years ago, my parents took my children to visit cousins in Massachusetts, and they went on a whale watch. Yes, Diana, they had a whale of a time!
Blessings!
What fun, Martha. Whale watching with cousins. If they enjoy their cousins as much as we do, they have a whale of a time with or without whales! Have a wonderful week.
I remember having many whale of good times, back in the days of Acteens! How about you! Love you Diana and treasure those days.
Oh, Kathy, you brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart with those memories! I love you, sweet friend, and am so thankful for our many shared experiences.
I’ve not been blessed to experience the whales as you did. I’d love to–and I’m sure it would be a “whale of a time.” Thanks for sharing this uplifting message.
This was a few years ago, Katherine, and it still makes me happy to think about it. I hope the opportunity comes your way some day. Thank you.
