Hang On to Your Hat
Recent storms brought windy weather. As a result, you needed to hang on to your hat. You also needed to hang on to everything else around you.
To hang on to your hat means to prepare yourself.
Something is about to happen, and you want to get ready. Often, the event is unexpected and shocking. It may affect:
- Individuals
- Small groups
- Large numbers of people
A similar expression tells you to hold on to your hat.
Life is full of surprises.
It frequently throws you for a loop with both pleasant and unpleasant changes. Like roller coaster rides, its twists and turns can thrill or terrify. Changes occur in:
- Relationships
- Employment
- Weather
- Health
- World events
When life storms or trials occur, you may find it hard to hang on to your faith.
Change throws you off balance. You struggle to understand. Yet, God uses every experience, good and bad, expected and unexpected, to help you grow.
Hang on to your hat and see where God leads.
Through even the hardest times, you may be pleasantly surprised.
“‘Where is your faith’ he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, ‘Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him’” (Luke 8:25 NIV).
Thanks to Judy Corbin for the suggestion and to Karen Atwood for the photo.

Another great saying that we hear all the time. Thanks, Diana!
Thank you, Martha. It has certainly applied in many ways recently.
Yes, I’m hanging on to my hat as we prepare for summer vacation time with the grandchildren. The two grands will be with us a lot during the weeks of summer. Alan and I are looking forward to fun every day. 🙂
Melissa, I’m sure you’ll have a great time (and probably a few related posts) during their time with you. Enjoy every minute!
Great correlation to the God’s Word, Diana. God uses every experience.
Thanks, Tracy. Judy actually suggested the application along with the expression. I thought it fit perfectly. I’m so thankful God uses every experience, even the hard ones.
Life seems to be moving so fast these days that I feel like I need to “hang on to my hat” every moment. Your wisdom fits my need–“Hang on to my hat to see where God leads.” Thank you, Diana.
I hear you and can identify, Katherine. I pray we always follow where God leads. Blessings.
Diana, I loved this one! “Hang on to your hat and see where God leads.” Some days I feel like we may not know where we are going, however, I’m grateful I know the One who leads the way.
My gratitude reflects yours, Joanne. Some days overwhelm us but never overwhelm our loving God.
Great post, Diana, and great reminder to not only hang onto our hats but hold onto our faith! Blessings to you.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words, Kim. Some days our faith feels like the only stability in our lives, but God’s presence carries us through whatever we face. Blessings.
In today’s world, I not only hang onto my hat, I pull the collar up to keep the cold winds of change at bay. As you point out so well, we need to be sure of where we hang our hat also. When I place it in the security of the Lord, then I know both I and it are protected. With Him, let the winds blow, for they will usher me into glory at His promised return. Oh, glorious day.
What a wonderful summary, J.D. When life’s winds blow, we can rest securely in the arms of our Savior. Have a great week!
