Chopped Liver

Chopped Liver

Chopped Liver--bowl of chopped chicken liverDoes anyone out there like chopped liver? I tried to eat it by:

  • Hiding it in mashed potatoes
  • Holding my nose
  • Breading it and adding spices

Nothing worked. It still tasted like liver. I know liver is good for me, but I don’t like it. I consider it a dish for the birds.

Whether we eat it or not, we sometimes feel like chopped liver.

No matter how hard we try:

  • Not everyone likes us.
  • Many overlook us.
  • Few appreciate our potential.

Chopped liver means worthless.

We judge a person or thing as:

  • Unpleasant
  • Unimportant
  • Undesirable

Emotional responses to such treatment include:

  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Disappointment
  • Defeat
  • Frustration

A common verbal response is, “So what am I? Chopped liver?”

We may say this when:

  • We fail to get a job.
  • Friends reject us.
  • People make fun of us.

According to The Free Dictionary, this expression “likely originated as a part of Jewish humor.”

It probably refers to “chopped liver as a common side dish.”  It was “overlooked in favor of the main course.” Many people dislike its taste.

We may consider chopped liver as good only for garbage. Yet, we never want to treat one another that way.

“To love [God] with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices” (Mark 12:33 NIV).

  1. I may be the odd person out, Diana, but I actually love chicken livers every now and then, especially the way my husband cooks them for me (he doesn’t like to eat them). However, I’ve used that phrase many times in my life and I love knowing more about its origin. Thanks and blessings!

  2. I like liver myself but have never heard of it as a side dish. My granddaughter loved Cracker Barrel’s chicken livers when she was little. That was surprising.

    1. I had never heard of liver as a side dish until I explored the origin, Tracy. That was probably one of my most interesting recent discoveries. You and your granddaughter can help Martha eat extras for me.

  3. I’m sure we have all experienced the “chopped liver” feeling.
The opposite pulls rank. And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
    Eph. 3:19
    .. another great post

  4. I confess, beef liver is not my favorite, although my mother could make it edible. Chicken livers can be good, depending on how they’re cooked. I’ve experienced the feeling of being “chopped liver” before–in the work setting, church, or home. I’m thankful our loving Father never treats us as chopped liver.

  6. I have to confess I am a “liver-lover” but it has to be cooked just right. My husband loves it only when I make it, smothered in onions and alongside mashed potatoes. Having said that, I actually have not made it in years because when you remember that your liver filters out all the nasties going through your body, that’s the same for chickens and cattle!!
Now, I do sometimes feel like chopped liver and then have to admit that is probably my pride speaking! Glad to join this group and look forward to interesting conversations!
    Blessings to all, Jan

    1. Hmmm, Jan, I never thought about that filter angle. Maybe I’ll reconsider beating myself up for not liking liver.
I understand that chopped liver feeling and also have to acknowledge pride getting in the way sometimes. I look forward to future conversations! Blessings.
